Turnable and non-turnable mattresses

non turn mattressWhen looking for a new mattress you may have come across the terms turnable and non-turnable mattresses. The question is what are turnable and non-turnable mattresses and why would you ever want to turn your mattress?

Turnable and non-turnable mattresses

Mattresses that require regular turning need to be done so to assist with settlement issues and general wear and tear. They are designed in a way where both sides of the mattress can be used and mostly, but not always, contain fibers in their fillings such as wool, cotton, white fiber etc.

Turnable mattresses need turning on a regular basis and will generally not perform as they should if they are not flipped. The turning schedule of turnable mattresses can vary from mattress to mattress. Some may be twice a year, some once a month. What is usually the case, however, is that turnable mattresses need turning more in the first few months. To find out how often a mattress needs turning simply ask one of our sleep experts at the time of purchase.

non-turn mattresses

No turn mattresses are designed in a way where only one side of the mattress should be slept on. They should never be flipped over as the non-sleeping side provides minimal support and comfort and will not do the job the mattress was designed to do.

Non-turn mattresses are generally built with a comfort layer that is not prone to settlement. This is made possible by either the use of foam and rubber or by preparing and layering the fillings in a way that makes them more durable.

When looking for a new mattress, you will find that latex, Geltex and memory foam are often used to make a mattress non-turn. This is due to their ability to retain shape and “bounce back”. In mattress that use fibers in their comfort layers (wool, cotton etc.) Pillow tops and box tops are often used in the design.

Rotating a no turn mattress

Although non-turn mattresses sound as if there is no maintenance required there is still one procedure you need to do on a regular basis. If you want your mattress to last and perform throughout its life as it has been designed to do, you need to rotate your mattress regularly.

To do this, you simply need to spin the mattress on the spot so the head end is now at the foot end. Do not flip your mattress, just turn it on the spot.

This will make sure that sleeping positions are changed regularly and wear and tear is spread more evenly.

No Need to Turn Mattresses

Many people like the idea of a no turn mattresses but would at least prefer to have the choice. Thankfully there is an option for this. No need to turn mattresses are mattresses that don’t need to be turned but can be if you wish. In theory, this means that regular turning isn’t necessary even though each side does provide support and comfort.

Winter and Summer Sides

Whilst mattress shopping, you may have come across a mattress that has a “winter and summer” side. A mattress that seemingly only needs turning twice a year. These mattresses are generally fiber filled and have different materials or blends in each side. This could be where one side is filled primarily with a warmer filling for the winter. Whilst the other side is primarily filled with a cooler material, for the summer. Cotton and wool are commonly use for this purpose.
