What to Look for in a Pillow?

Everyone at some point will have complained about neck and shoulder pain or will have heard someone complaining about neck and shoulder pain. Although there are a whole range of reasons why this person is experiencing such pain it is usually because of their pillows which is actually the one thing which gets overlooked.

On the market today there is lots of choice available from goosedown, duckdown, feather, fibre filled, visco-elastic, latex or polyurethane foam. These are the main types although these can be combined to create even more choice! If this wasn’t bad enough pillows then come in a number of different sizes and shapes.

What should you look for in a pillow?

The definition of a “good” pillow is one which is going to support your head and keep it in the correct alignment; the correct alignment is in the same relation to your shoulders and spine as if you were standing upright with good posture. In order to eliminate waking up with shoulder and neck pain you should always ensure that the pillows are tucked into the neck and shoulder – thus your head will be supported fully.

How many pillows should I have?

The number of pillows you should have on your bed comes down to personal choice, body shape and your preferred sleeping position. If you sleep on your side then you will require a thicker pillow or two thinner ones than if you are someone sleeping on their back. What isn’t recommended is for you to sleep on your front with your neck all twisted as this is more likely to result in back, neck and shoulder pain.

How often should I replace my pillows?

Our advice from Prestige Beds is that you should invest in high quality pillows and then change them every two or three years in order to eliminate back, neck and shoulder pain. It is pretty obvious when a pillow needs replacing; it may become discoloured, misshapen or even lumpy in places and these are all signs that you should seek to choose some new pillows.

Another thing to bear in mind and something which is slightly cringe is that an old pillow which has not been washed but has been heavily used could contain around 10% of its weight in skin scales, mould, dead and living dust mites and their droppings!

Prestige Beds supply a whole range of high quality, premium pillows which would be ideal for eliminating back, neck and shoulder pain and it could be the difference between waking up in the morning feeling refreshed and waking up in the morning feeling grumpy.
