An ottoman bed is a bed frame or divan which offers a majority of its interior space for storage. Access to the storage area is made possible via a lifting platform which is connected to either the side or head end of the base via a hinged system. As the mattress rests on this platform, tension springs or a hydraulic system are used to assist the user with the process of lifting and raising the platform. ottoman storage beds are commonly referred to as lift up storage beds.
Ottoman divans and bed frames offer excellent storage solutions and are readily available from us at Prestige Beds. The design of many bed frame ottomans also allows for a greater weight load than drawer storage solutions due to their ability to use the floor or a sturdy base as support.
The raising platform in ottoman divans and ottoman bed frames differ greatly. Ottoman divans usually have a slim platform that is constructed in a way that matches the design of the divan. Bed frames commonly have a similar platform but they tend to be constructed of a metal framework with sprung slats. In other cases, such as fabric ottoman bed frames a flat surface (no slats) is used over the metal frame.
Both of these options work just as well as each other taking the majority of mattresses available. However, If you do buy a slatted bed frame make sure that any mattress you choose is suitable for slats.
Access to the inside of the bed is usually one of three variations.
Side Lift Ottoman Storage Beds
Side lift ottomans are a variation of lift up storage beds in which the bed is opened from one side. The “hinged side” has a number of mechanical hinges and hydraulic cylinders that assist with the opening of the bed. These are ideal if space at the foot of the bed is limited. Side lift ottomans usually require the headboard to be slightly away from the bed base to allow the mattress to pass. This is made possible with washer like fittings that sandwich between the base and the headboard. the headboard bolt then passes through the headboard the fitting and then into the bed base.
End Lift Ottoman Beds
End lift ottomans are the more common variation. Access to the storage space is made possible by a platform that is lifted from one side of the bed. As the platform is lifted from the foot end the headboard can fit snuggly against the bed base/frame. End lift ottomans can be a little more expensive than their side lift counterparts due to the requirement of stronger mechanics and hydraulics.
Half Ottoman / Lift Up Storage Beds
Half ottomans are a lift up storage beds that only give you access to one half of the bed interior. The top half can then make the use of drawers or without storage. Half ottoman storage beds aren’t as popular as they were due to the similar price of side lift ottomans.
