When purchasing a new mattress many prefer the idea of using keeping existing base, saving their budget for the mattress. This guide explains why this always a great idea whilst answering the question. Should I replace an existing bed base when purchasing a new mattress?
In an ideal world, it is always wise to replace a divan base when replacing the mattress. Due to budget and other circumstances, however, we understand that this may not always possible. If you would prefer to avoid purchasing a new base there are a number of things you should check on your existing divan to make sure it is in a good enough condition for your new mattress.
First, check the existing base for sagging, out of place springs (sprung bases), squeaking and/or creaking. If you find any of these it is definitely advised that you replace.
Second, see if any of the drawers are damaged, make sure all of the castors/feet are present and that the two halves of your bases are connected and lined up.
Remember if your mattress is on a bed frame or bedstead this is a different matter. In this case, you need to make sure the frame is sturdy, that it is level, has no parts missing (slats, bolts, or other fittings), that all screws and bolts are tight and that the frame is not making any noise when in use.
Remember, when purchasing a new mattress for a bedframe always make sure that the mattress is suitable. There are many mattresses out there that are not designed to work on a slatted base. IF this is the case, a divan or other form of platform top base is required.
Reasons for purchasing a replacement base
Although it isn’t detrimental, bases, especially sprung divans are in most cases designed to work with the mattress they are paired with by the manufacturer. This is to ensure that the mattress lasts and is allowed to work as it is designed to.
When purchased together the cost is usually much lower than buying separate therefore if you find out that you did need a new base in the weeks following you may end up paying more than you would if bought together.
Mattresses, in many cases, can have longer guarantees or warranties when bought with their designated base. This is due to manufacturers not knowing what base they are being used on. Therefore the best manufacturer guarantees and warranties are provided when they know what base your mattress has been used on. An old base that seems okay may have hidden problems that could destroy your new mattress in just months.
Bases may look ok from the outside but unseen issues such as the framework or the springs may have faults.
Should I replace an existing bed base when purchasing a new mattress?
Most mattresses are replaced between 8 and 12 years therefore in most cases the base is usually just as old. This could mean that the technology used in the base (especially in sprung bases) may be out of date whilst the condition of its components are no longer in the best state.
Should I replace an existing bed base when purchasing a new mattress? we highly recommend you do. If budget or other circumstances mean you can’t change your base, make sure your current one is in excellent condition. If the existing base is in a poor condition it is best to at least purchase a low-cost, platform top, non-storage base. As a last resort, even a dry, smooth and flat floor is a better option than a damaged, old base.
